Coach Shipp

Coach John Shipp: Head Coach Fountain Valley High School

This is Coach John Shipp's 8th year as Head Coach for Fountain Valley High School. He comes to us from Golden West College where he was a coach for 3 years. From 1995 thru 1998 he coached at McKenna College. During his playing career he received many awards and honors. In 1994, he was awarded MVP and SCIAC Offensive Player of the Year Award as well as Honorable Mention All American. He was also Captain of his team at Claremont College in 1994 as well as Captain in 1992 while at Golden West. Coach Shipp also received the Honorary Service Award at Johnson Middle School in 2003. Coach Shipp's philosophy on coaching is "Through mental and physical preparation we will unite as one and accomplish our goals as a team."

Coach Shipp lives in Fountain Valley with his wife Danielle and their daughter Alyssa. Coach Shipp leads a very active life and when he is not coaching. He likes to spend his time golfing, dirt bike riding, and playing flag football. If you were to ask Coach Shipp what his favorite memory is, he would tell you "Every time I got to step onto the football field." The one person that has inspired him the most, "Coach Ray Shackleford, from Golden West College, has taught me how true discipline learned through athletics is the center piece for success."


Coach Brummett

Coach Dan Brummett: Defensive Coordinator/ Linebackers

Coach Brummett starts his 5th year coaching at FVHS after 10 years of coaching at HBHS, the last 4 of which were as defensive coordinator. Coach Brummett graduated from HBHS in 1987, Golden West College in 1990, and received his Bachelor's degree from UCI in 1992. He went back to school in 2000 to get his teaching credential and earn a master's degree from National University. He lives in Fountain Valley with his wife Elaine, their son Lucas and daughter Reese. In his off time, he enjoys going to the gym, playing with his kids, and traveling with his wife. Coach Brummett's favorite football memory is when his unranked Oilers upset top-ten ranked Esperanza 14-10 in 2003, which was his first win as defensive coordinator. His coaching philosophy is "Play every down like it's the last one you will ever play."


Coach S Brummett

Coach Scott Brummett: JV/Varsity Wide Receivers/Special Teams

Coach Brummett returns for his 4th year of coaching. He graduated from HBHS in 1978, Golden West College in 1982, and Cal State Long Beach in 1984. He grew up in Huntington Beach and currently lives in Fountain Valley. Coach Brummett's hobbies include listening to live music and playing guitar. His favorite football memories include receiving First Team All-Sunset League honor his senior year, catching two touchdowns passes and recovering a fumble against Garden Grove HS that led to a victory after a very long losing steak, and winning the Avocado Bowl State Championship at Golden West College. Coach Brummett has two coaching philosophies: the team comes first over any individual, and develop and mentor a player's character, not just as a football player, but also as a young man preparing for life as a productive citizen and family man.


Coach Fifita

Coach Steve Fifita: Varsity Defensive Line

Coach Fifita returns to his Alma Mater this year to coach the defensive line. Steve is a 2000 FVHS Grad and was Team Captain and Defensive MVP for the Barons. Coach Fifita was twice selected as an All-Sunset League First Team; his senior year he was a First Team All County selection; and he was MVP at the 2000 North South All-Star Game. Coach Fifita accepted a football scholarship to the University of Utah where he was a three year starter and earned a degree in Sociology. He was a three time All Mountain West selection and his junior year was named Defensive MVP of the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. Coach Fifita's NFL career included playing for the Frankfurt Galaxy, Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. He is owner of Fifita Sports (athletic apparel and equipment distribution company) and FPT (Fundamentals Plus Techniques) Pro Skills Training for offensive and defensive line. In his spare time, he enjoys training and mentoring young athletes, going to church, golfing, and spending time with his girls. Coach Fifita is married to his high school girlfriend, Heidi Glatt. They have three daughters Makayla, Nia, and Baby Malia. Steve and Heidi reside in Fountain Valley.


Coach Gruca

Coach Todd Gruca: Offensive Line

Coach Gruca graduated from FVHS in 1996 and is returning in his 7th year as Offensive Line Coach. After graduating form FVHS, Coach Gruca attended CSU Chico where he graduated with the class of 2000. In 1997, he was the JV offensive line coach for FVHS and, in 2003, he was the freshman O-line coach at Long Beach Wilson. Last year, he relocated to the Island of Dominica with his wife Heather, where he coached at the University of Dominica for 13 months. Coach Gruca loves to read and paint. Staying together as a bond, through the good times and the bad, and overcoming all obstacles in the pursuit of individual and team success is his belief. His favorite football memory is winning the bell his senior year 27-22 in the final minute of the game. He is grateful for the bond he has formed with the wonderful young men throughout his years of coaching.


Coach Johnson

Coach Brett Johnson: Strength and Conditioning

This is Coach Johnson's 5th year assisting in the weight room and off-season conditioning program. He works as a Physical Therapist/Certified Athletic Trainer at California Rehab and Sports Therapy. He has been involved with Fountain Valley football for 12 years and has assisted Mr. Kols with any injuries on and off the field. Coach Johnson was the athletic trainer/strength coach at Marina HS for 1998-2005 and Oceanview HS from 2005-2007. He was the Athletic Director for FV Junior All American Football. He has lived in Fountain Valley for 14 years. He and his wife Tammy have 3 children: their daughters Bailey and Taylor and their son Chase. Coach Johnson enjoys fishing with Chase and coaching sports. His favorite saying is "Championships are started in the weight room."


Coach Taylor

Coach Patrick Taylor: Offensive Line/Strength

Coach Taylor graduated from FVHS in 2002. As a senior he earned the Doug Thompson Gauntlet Award. His previous coaching experiences include coaching the FHVS freshman football team in 2009, and the JV/Varsity Barons in 2010. Coach Taylor lives in Foothill Ranch with his wife Christie. They are currently expecting a baby girl. His favorite memory? Beating Edison at Angels Stadium, of course! Coach Taylor's hobbies include school, fantasy football, and Madden. He believes that "Building good football players is great, building great men is imperative."
